Kia ora koutou

Our new bus driver Emma with her boys Alex, Theo, Arty and Michael.

I’d like to welcome Emma Hughes-Games onto our staff as our new bus driver. Emma and Fi will be sharing the role. The three of us are completing a number of unit standards over the next three days to complete our bus drivers licence training. There is a lot that it entails, so we appreciate these two ladies for what they are doing for our school.

Often parents say to me that they ask their child what did they learn, or what did they do at school today, and they say ‘nothing’. I found these suggestions of questions and conversation starters to ask when your child comes home, and I thought they might be helpful:

  • Did anything funny happen at school today?

  • I was thinking about you! Want to know what I was thinking about?

  • Did you make any mistakes today? Great!

  • What do you need right now? I’m here for your tears, quiet time, or a chat.

  • What did you read at school today?

  • Who did you play with? What games did you play?

  • Tell me about the best part of your day.

  • Can you show me something you learned today?

  • Was maths easy or hard today? Why?

  • What was the hardest thing you had to do today?

Kia ora koutou,

Ze’ev, Zac, Lily, Thomas and Andy practising their scrums with Craig!

I loved seeing the excitement of our students last week when they got to play tackle rugby at school! A big thanks to Craig Mullan, from Canterbury Rugby, who came out for a coaching session. It’s wonderful to see the opportunities our students get - from reading to preschoolers at Bloomfield Preschool, visiting the Hurunui library, playing tackle rugby, and this week performing at the North Canterbury Kapa Haka Festival. We enjoy seeing their grit, determination and positivity when trying new things, and pushing themselves out of their comfort zone.

This week we welcome Arly and Judah for their preschool visits and can’t wait for them to join our Paemoana class next week. It’s always lovely to see those tuakana-teina relationships when our seniors look after our juniors throughout the day.

I would like to say a big thank you to Elizabeth Maddren who finishes this Friday, after teaching Paemoana for 5 weeks. We have loved having her join our Omihi whānau, and Paemoana have been very lucky to have such wonderful learning over the last few weeks. I would also like to acknowledge Liz Grigg who is one of our regular relievers. It’s very hard to get relievers, so to have two experienced and excellent relievers that we can use regularly, and who know our children well, is a real treat.

Have a lovely week, and remember my door is always open if you would like to catch up.

Precision Yamaha Omihi School Trail Ride - Saturday 4th November (pp Sunday 5th November)
We are well into the planning of this. This is our major fundraiser of the year, and to make it work we need parent volunteers on the day. Thank you to Sofia who is going to lead the BBQ again this year.

Kia ora koutou

It’s been a lovely two weeks back at school. Even though the weather has been up and down, our tamariki have been focused, and really excited to be back learning, especially about our inquiry, which is focused on Ancient Civilisations! I loved teaching in Tūpari last week, and having the time to catch up on their learning and to see their progress.

We have had guitar and recorder club started up this term, led by Kelly. What a treat! It’s so lovely to see more music throughout the school. We are looking forward to our Kapahaka performance this term also.

Welcome to Delia, who has joined our Tūpari class, and Arlo, who has joined Awaawa. We are excited to have you join our Omihi whānau. Also a warm welcome to Judah who will be joining Paemoana.

Michael, Arlo, Mrs Lucas, Delia, Liza and Vuk

Welcome to Elizabeth Maddren who is joining us for 5 weeks while Georgie is overseas. Elizabeth is one of our regular relievers, so it’s lovely to have her join us full time for the first half of the term. She knows our tamariki very well.

It’s nice to be back after 9 months of maternity leave, and I look forward to catching up with you at drop offs or pick ups. We had some lovely family time away in our caravan. Delilah and Ada did very well adjusting to life on the road.

This term I start the Lead Principal role for our Tipu Māia kāhui ako. This will be a new learning curve and challenge for me as a leader, and I will work it throughout the week at Omihi. There are times when I will need to be out of school, but as Penny is also an Across School Lead in our kāhui, we will aim to have a lot of our meetings at Omihi. This is also a great opportunity for our school. It means we gain extra staffing, which helps us to continue with our 3 classes.

Pharmacies minor health condition service
This winter, between Monday 12 June and Saturday 30 September, participating community pharmacies in Canterbury will provide a Minor Health Conditions Service for children aged under 14 years, Māori and Pacific people, and community service card holders.

The service allows pharmacists to have a clinical consultation and provide advice as well as medication for a select set of minor ailments at no cost to the patient.

It also includes whānau members with similar symptoms. For example, if the pharmacist determines your child needs treatment for scabies and they have older brothers or sisters, or you yourself also have symptoms, they may provide advice and medication for all of you.

The following health conditions are included in the Minor Health Conditions Service:

  • Acute diarrhoea, Dehydration, Eye inflammation and infections, Scabies, Headlice, Pain and fever, Eczema/Dermatitis, Minor skin infections

If your condition needs further support, the pharmacist can tell you the best place to go for your condition to get further help.

Google Family Link app
Google Family Link is a free app that enables parents to set restrictions such as Wi-Fi and time limits on their child's phone usage. It's a useful tool for managing and monitoring your child's phone activities. You can download it to Apple or Android devices.
